I work in Culver City and pass by these galleries all the time, but I hadn't been to many of them so this was a great opportunity. I met up with Monique and Gretchen at Royal/T Cafe, got a decadent cup of Royal T milk tea to go, and we were off. We parked by Helms and walked up Washington to La Cienega, and back. I think we covered about 20 galleries total. Some were good, some were whatever, but all in all it was great to see so many people spending their Saturday afternoon strolling around looking at art.

Of the 20 or so galleries we visited, one of my favorite shows were Conor Harrington & Chloe Early CHASING CASTLES at Kinsey/Desforges. You can actually see a set of photos fron this show here. Their work to me was like a combination of graffiti, CG, and painting. I especially loved how Chloe Early captured the nostalgia of past summers with overlapping imagery and collage that depicts how memories live in your mind far more accurately than the actual imagery that we think we remember.

My other favorite show was at Taylor De Cordoba Gallery. I walked in and was immediately drawn to the intricate paintings on the walls. As I glanced at the title on the wall, I realized that the artist's name sounded familiar. It was Jeana Sohn, who's blog I have followed for a while now. I don't even remember how I came upon her blog, but I always enjoyed the beautiful photos she takes of her daily life. Her paintings at the show were breathtaking. They were so delicate, each painted with love. It was Monique's favorite too. The show is up until June 27th, so you should check it out in person. Get real up close to it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 294px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SiL4lbR8AII/AAAAAAAAAMc/tEWFCjS9vzQ/s400/33.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342105429876670594" />
A jpeg does not do it justice.

Earthworks 03: Impulse

I am participating in a group show that's opening tonight in Little Tokyo.

Earthworks 03: Impulse presented by Cafe Mode
opening reception MAY 7, 2009 [5 to 11 PM]
May 7, 2009 - July 7, 2009

SHOJIN restaurant
333 S. Not much of a pattern, but I will post some more in days to come...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 191px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/Sdlw6GUGqfI/AAAAAAAAALs/twe7zXydrfc/s400/sexygirl_repeat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321408578144610802" />

Set design for Flower of the Season

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/ScWGmdDhhCI/AAAAAAAAALk/r59V60AuoG0/s400/RIMG0354.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315802930373297186" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/ScWGixwvilI/AAAAAAAAALc/NhKNzkwx06U/s400/RIMG0352.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315802867212192338" />

This was last month, but I worked on the set design for my friend and dancer Meyu Kobayashi's performance for Flower of the Season at Electric Lodge. I am not an animator but I know animators can draw (even though
John K. is saying that a lot of them don't). I've never really learned any theory about how to draw. It was more like "Here, here's a flower. Have fun." I do think there is a beauty to just sitting there with your subject and figuring out for yourself how to go about translating that onto paper. I've even thought that learning the theory on how to draw was kind of like cheating. But I got curious. What if I do learn the rules and follow them?

This is my attempt at learning how to draw. Very simple and fun. I want to try to sketch more on the computer because I'm sitting in front of one all the time anyway. Plus it feels more casual and less daunting. It helps a lot that William gave me a Wacom tablet for Valentine's Day. I've been using one at work for a few years now but never had one at home. It's the smallest one (Bamboo Fun) but I love it!

This is a super rough sketch but hopefully I will have more to come.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 303px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/Sa4jjWDqw2I/AAAAAAAAAKc/FGS5E7rI40Q/s400/william.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309220100839752546" />

Transformation

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/San_PuxsxNI/AAAAAAAAAKU/oy39uhxLg4Y/s400/earthworks02_invite.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308054281552446674" />
Currently showing at a group show.

Earthworks 02: Transformation presented by CAFE MODE
February 26, 2009 - April 26, 2009
SHOJIN restaurant 333 S. Of course this blog only got updated 11 times this year. 2008 was good, despite the unexpected lay off and the declining economy. I now have a new job that I love and enjoy, and this country will have a new president in about three weeks.

David came down from SF to hang out for the holidays and I think we did our fair share of partying. He brought some awesome Christmas gifts- "Little Big Planet" and "The Last Remnant"! LBP is super cute but I need to up my gaming skills because the simplest movements are so hard for me.

Yesterday I got to go to Joshua Tree for the first time although it was rather brief and COLD! It was beautiful out there though, and I had fun watching William and Angeline ride this crazy bike that Kio and Alan made and shot for their film.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SVgl88MtmfI/AAAAAAAAAKA/LwPSdvVZsO0/s400/RIMG0110.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285015891601103346" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SVglzA1DA-I/AAAAAAAAAJ4/LaF6nPzp4Vs/s400/RIMG0087.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285015721045328866" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SVglmVzz4BI/AAAAAAAAAJw/157hqC80_Z8/s400/RIMG0073.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285015503338987538" />

Autumn

Last summer I made a few posts about gardening. My lavenders are still doing ok, but the potted plants have long gone. My yard as seen in this post was overgrown, but imagine another year had gone by without any maintenance. Yes, it was out of control. My landlord finally said something about it, and so I made yet another attempt to improve the situation.

It's literally back-breaking work dragging over 60 palm fronds that are between 15-20ft long with hard spikes on them. I was out in the yard again today trying to clear out the back end of the yard (which I rarely visit) and found this.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SRfipLwAHUI/AAAAAAAAAJI/Hh8QqN5YsCY/s400/RIMG1831.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266927486389722434" />

It's hard to tell from the photo but I think it's slightly larger than a cat. ...But a skull? Off the top of my head, I can count 9 cameras. More then half of them are Lomography cameras that I've collected over the years. I also have a nice SLR that I barely ever use. I use my Lomo LC-A the most, but lately I've been trying to use my Smena Symbol more.

I'm always excited to see what kind of images I get, and I was especially pleased with the results from my last roll of film. My standards have become pretty low at this point...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SOFwvBDFlUI/AAAAAAAAAIg/rTNQt1TbME4/s400/ss4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251602593528255810" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SOFv7oOR8YI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/6aJfyaDXj-A/s400/ss5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251601710690988418" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SOFwGoW7Z5I/AAAAAAAAAIY/ZWFFFx6CSks/s400/heita.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251601899705821074" />

The lesson I have learned from all of this is as follows:

- choose a design without thin lines in between

- use enough screen filler (I didn't, and I ended up having to coat the screen more than once which is not recommended)

- be careful when washing out the drawing fluid or cleaning the screen so as not to blow out the image

- don't give up

I definitely want to try this again. Despite the mess, I had fun.

Silk screening: step two

I was starting to think that silk screening was easy.
For over 4 years I watched guys at work screen printing shirts. Piece of cake. I knew all about it too. "It's smudging. The screen needs to be cleaned." "The image isn't coming out. The ink dried up and it's clogging the mesh."
Then I tried doing it myself for the first time in like 6 years or possibly more. Yeah, now I remember... I suck at this.

I think I've been seeing all these beautiful prints online and elsewhere, I began to believe that it was going to be just as easy and beautiful for me as well. I went to an art opening on Saturday at Little Bird Gallery that featured prints by various designers/artists. Of course all the work was beautiful and flawless. The show is called "OFF-REGISTER" but the prints I saw were pretty much well registered, not to mentions there were no smudges in sight.

Anyway, here is my first attempt at these prints.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SOEmNLpc7CI/AAAAAAAAAHw/VodtpsJHEG4/s400/ss3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251520648397515810" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SOEmV539FII/AAAAAAAAAH4/x_O269jDDGg/s400/ss2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251520798245328002" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SOEmcLgksMI/AAAAAAAAAIA/Ca8L0lQ6TQo/s400/ss1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251520906058313922" />

Disastrous. Talk about smudges. I decided to clean the screen and start over. Once again, I'm waiting for my screen to dry so I can attempt this again. I know I can do this... I hope.

Silk screening: step one

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SOARGsHxkJI/AAAAAAAAAHo/TtmlxiqKFwc/s400/ss3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251215972134654098" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SOARBSY6yOI/AAAAAAAAAHg/dRUKsHyLKJQ/s400/ss1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251215879327893730" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SOAQ3UvZWEI/AAAAAAAAAHY/AkNvCYkvRVI/s400/ss2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251215708160350274" />
I bought this book Printing by Hand by Lena Corwin a few weeks ago at a store in Silver Lake called <a href="http://www.reformschoolrules.com/ target="_blank>Reform School. Since then I've been itching to make some prints. The book introduces a good variety of printing techniques- some I was familiar with, and some I was not. I've done some silk screening when I was in school and I've worked for a screen printer, so this technique is not new to me. But I was surprised to learn that there are more ways to print with the screen than to just make the stencil by burning the film onto the emulsion coated screen.

I have a screen that I'd bought years ago in college that I have never used. I decided to use one of the techniques shown in the book to make my first ever print with my very own screen. I bought some screen drawing fluid and started painting directly on the screen. I am letting it dry right now. Later I will coat the screen with screen filler and after that's dry, wash out the part I painted with drawing fluid. Then I'll finally be able to print. It's a lot of drying and waiting for now...

Ants on a Log

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SNbemYzwKsI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/CBvti7CaAYU/s400/RIMG1673.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248627166822804162" />
William started this diet this week, and part of it requires him to eat celery with peanut butter. First he chose Jiff, then later realized that it needed to be organic peanut butter. Watching him eat this snack made me want one myself, so I decided to make one out of Jiff and another out of Trader Joe's organic peanut butter. I added some raisins to complete the nostalgic snack "Ants on a Log".

The Jiff is to the right, and the organic peanut butter is the shinier runnier looking one.

Jiff: Eating it with the celery made me realize how sweet the peanut butter was. I could taste the sugar. Not so much the peanuts.

TJ's organic peanut butter: No sweetness here, but I could really taste the peanuts. Very rich flavor.

I added more raisins to the organic peanut butter and it was perfect. When I first encountered ants on a log (they do not have these in Japan) I thought it was the strangest thing. But then again I thought PB&J was weird.

giant spider

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SM3BEIQHPQI/AAAAAAAAAHI/vtdWYnLOWv8/s400/spi2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246061417635200258" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SM3A-O5cT_I/AAAAAAAAAHA/U4oCZHG5Y0U/s400/spi1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246061316339945458" />

This spider has been building and rebuilding its web for over a week now. I couldn't imagine what it would taste like at the time, but it just sounded good. I scooped a spoonful as soon as I got home, and was instantly glad I made this choice. It's so good!! Basically it tastes like pears. With pecans mixed in. The pear is refreshing while the pecan and the creamy ice cream is rich. I've never seen this flavor before but I guess it's not that new.

Haagen-Dazs has a new flavor called "Vanilla Honey Bee", which donates the proceeds to support the research to protect honey bees. They're disappearing and nobody knows why! Visit their special website for more info.

New Face

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/SMTBt_KixNI/AAAAAAAAAGo/ENtTp5q11DY/s320/03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243528861960029394" />
I decided to finally add a banner for this blog. AGAIN. STILL. I think the last time In posted, I played for a while but then stopped again. I got busy. Something like that. But a few weeks ago, things happened and I along with 9 other employees got let go from our job. Yeah, it sucked. It was a management thing so there was nothing we could do about it. But as I recovered from my state of shock (which was surprisingly brief) I began to think about all the possibilities... I can go to that farmers market they have in my town on Thursdays! I can finally work on my web site that has been close to being abandoned! I can... I can finally FINISH FINAL FANTASY XII...!!!

Unfortunately William has little tolerance for watching FFXII so I have to sneak around at night or when he's not around to play. Last night I was up until 3 am doing a hunt. What I've realized is that the graphics aren't that hot now that I'm used to seeing PS3 games. I'm looking forward to FFXIII. Who knows how long that will take me to finish. I'm probably the only person still blogging about FFXII in real time. But despite the time it's taken me to get this far, I think I can do it. This is my chance. I think I can beat this game! I'm going to be sad though, so I think I'm going to hang around a bit longer doing hunts and other nonesense.

NabuYES

I started playing FFXII again.

After about 9 months of mourning, I was ready. Afterall, this blog was named after it. It was bound to happen sometime. I had to start from the very beginning but it was ok, since I had forgotten a lot of things about the game. Like how to change leaders. I'm pretty sure there was an easier way to doing this but I sort of figured it out. This time I have the strategy guidebook with me which makes it a bit easier. I felt like I was cheating though, but when I said this William simply replied, "You've already done all this". True.

Gardening: Day 30 something

So, gardening. I think it also sporouted more leaves (are they called leaves?).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/RoIHnn7T5EI/AAAAAAAAACY/gXzL2H_j3wQ/s320/tomatoplant.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080631706941383746" />
Tomato plant is way taller, and look!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/RoIH1X7T5FI/AAAAAAAAACg/60Wl_3SjT8o/s320/tomato.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080631943164585042" />
An actual tomato! I only have one tomato fruit growing so far... I hope i'll have more.

The lavenders are doing alright, aside from the fact that the English Lavender looks a little tired.

The okra and basil seedlings were doing fine for a while, but it stoped growing after a while. My okra never sprouted more leaves, and remained long and skinny. I tried to repot them too soon, which resulted in them wilting :( I had given up on my basil as well, and had left one pot sitting outside for a few days without water. Surely, it would have dried up and died...? But to my pleasant surprise, it was still alive! And kickin'!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/RoIIJH7T5GI/AAAAAAAAACo/uuat9kriObQ/s320/basil.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080632282467001442" />
It now had four leaves. I have kept it outside since, watering it occasionally without drowning it. It is growing slowly, but seems to be doing fine for now. I woinder how long it will take to become a decent plant that i can get basil leaves from.

Pies are best eaten at night

I just came home from the House of Pies Family Restaurant and Bakery in Los Feliz. I had passed by several times but never had had the opportunity to go inside. But tonight was the night.

After a pretty healthy meal of chicken patties with vegetable sauce and some tofu salad, William announced that he wanted some pastries. "Pastries??" I asked him what kind, and he started to name various baked goods. Apple pie, sweet potato pie, vanilla cake... I sat there trying to think of a place that served pastries after 9pm, and finally remembered House of Pies on the corner of Vermont and Franklin. It was hard to find parking because apparently everyone wants some pies on a Monday night. William was at first a little bummed to see that they didn't have any sweet potato pie, but decided on Southern Pecan pie a la mode. I got Dutch Apple and a decaf coffee. The best thing about family restaurants is that they have decaf. You can't get decaf at a cafe. Or can you? Either way, why would you go to a cafe to get decaffeinated coffee? I love my pastries with coffee, but as it was late at night, I gladly ordered decaf and it was awesome. So were the pies. The pecan pie reminded me of this pastry that my mom makes, and I reminded myself to ask her for the recipe.

There is something about going to a random place for a late-night indulgence that I love. It's spontaneous, carefree, and fun. It makes me feel like all of it is a part of a bigger plan. But the best part is that it isn't. All it is is eating pies. Then we go home.

Gardening: Day 3

Ok, so Day 3. I don't have a photo of my seedlings because nothing has happened yet. I've bought plants from time to time (especially this time of year) in hopes of starting a garden, but they have always ended up dying due to the lack of water. This time it'll be different, I would always say to myself. But so far, the results have been the same. The only survivor out of all the plants that I have attempted to grow in the past is Aloe Vera, plus a pot of lily that my roommate (3 roommates ago) had. There is also some lavender that I planted a while ago in the front of the house in the ground, which I'm assuming would not have survived this long if I had planted it in a pot. I just forget to water my plants. It's sad. I feel like a failure every time a leaf turns brown and crispy, crying out for water in this dry, severe SoCal climate.

Ok, so this time, for real. I can do this. That's what I'd like to think. For starters, I actually read a book on gardening this time. The book is really good, and makes understanding about soils much more easier than I had thought. After reading a couple of chapters, I decided to go out and get some plants.

This is what I am starting out with:

- mint [POT]: Can't remember how many time's I've tried to grow this
- lavender [GROUND]: I had a positive experience with it so why not get more
- tomatoes [POT]: Wasn't too sure about this one but maybe actually having some tomatoes to look forward to and harvest might help me water them on a regular basis

- basil [SEED]: Had bought seeds a while back and attempted to grow them once unsuccessfully
- okra [SEED]: Had randomly bought seeds a few weeks ago.

I am worried about the seeds, but I am going to try to keep a journal with photo documentation.

Now that I've put all this up on the Internet, hopefully this will help me keep up my garden.

Making a difference (with baby steps)

When I was at a graduation party in Palmdale last night, I was reminded by a friend about this blog. And how I have not written in it. I was surprised to hear that he had been checking up on it every now and then. But when he told me that the last post I had made was about the Darth Vader samurai doll, I felt better. I had forcasted ahead enough that the topic of my last entry was Children's Day, which just happened a week ago. I had been bloggin on Mixi (Japanese version of myspace) and micro blogging on Twitter, but it's true I had neglected Nabudis and Nabudat.

Lately I have been trying to make small differences to bring back order into my life. Or at least trying to get into the mindset of it. The house was a mess and had been for a long time, the backyard was a jungle, I was arriving at work late, cats were running amok leaving hair everywhere. Something needed to be done.

Cat hair was a problem. They are shedding more due to the season. I bought sitcky roller things to roll up hair on carpet and furniture (and clothes). I try to vacuum more. I also bought an amazing brush called the Furminator. The amount of hair it removes is unbelievable. Too bad the cats kind of freak out when I use it. Another change I made was getting up at before 9 (yes, nine). I have only managed to get to work 30 minutes earlier, but it's better than feeling guilty for being the last one to walk into the office. There was also some home improvement that went on. Nothing more than putting away my countless magazines and moving the unused computer desk into the livingroom so I can finally use my Powerbook on a desk instead of on top of a tiny bookshelf with no room for my legs, but it's made my life and the living room much better. More home improvement to come.

I started on the backyard today which is the biggest obstacle of all. The palm trees that tower between our house and the neighbors (but is technically on their property) drop huge "leaves" on the yard. These leaves are over 10ft long, heavy, dangerously spikey, and there were over 40 of them. While I think about how to get rid of these, I am going to read the book "You Grow Girl" that was delivered in the same Amazon box as the Furminator and figure out how to start a decent garden.

Darth Vader the Samurai

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/Re52FhhZKMI/AAAAAAAAAAs/YxPl4ezG4Gc/s320/380bl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039094870344018114" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/Re52ARhZKLI/AAAAAAAAAAk/6vTUAJbaIJw/s320/380al.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039094780149704882" />

In Mexico May 5 is Cinco de Mayo. In Japan, it's Childrens' Day, also known as "Boys' Day". It was originally just for boys, I guess, since girls have a day to themselves on March 3. So even though it's called "Kodomono hi" (litereally Childrens' Day) all the tradition that go with it pertain to boys. One of them is putting up a samurai outfit doll in your house. It's way too expensive and fragile so you can't play with it or anything, and besides, playing with dolls is for girls anyway with the exception of GI Joe's and Kinnikuman figurines. It just sits there looking angry with its crazy black mask that usually has a white mustache and crazy teeth. At least the one we had did.

But there is a new samurai doll in town. The Darth Vader samurai, available for approximately $2,800. I'm not particularly a Star Wars fan and to tell you the truth I haven't even seen all the movies (not even all the original ones), but it looks pretty cool. He looks like he's been doing it for years. He's a natural.

Ok, so I was only mildy amused by this doll and decided to blog about it because the photos were pretty nice. What I wanted to say was that this reminded me of the Imperial March, which to me is just Dave Dameshek singing "Creep of the Week".

A Weekend Guide to Palm Springs

I spent the weekend in Palm Springs. In my nine years of living in SoCal, I had never been to Palm Springs. I only had a vague picture of the place in my head, of gold courses and palm trees (duh) and hot springs (duh). But it turned out not to be entirely how I had imagined it. There were palm trees, planted unnaturally in the California desert. There were hotel resorts that said "spa". But I actually didn't see any golf courses (I think you have to drive to them somewhere), and I was surprised to see the mountains right there, just bam! In your face. The weather was dry, nice and warm enough for a tank top during the day but not blazing hot, and quite cold at night. The downtown area was nice and laid back, with a retro old hollywood feel complete with its own star walk of fame. The main street was lined with restaurants, souvenir shops, and several icecream shops. And yes, there were quite a few senior citizens. William and I ended up playing a game while sitting outside in the sun and waiting for our food at a cafe/bar/coffee place (I know, it's redundant, but that's what it said). The rule was simple. We look towards different ends of the street and whoever spots anyone younger/same age as us first, wins. This game lasted for at least 10 minutes, and this is a busy street with constant traffic.

Aside from counting the number of people under 30 years old, we went to a little town west of Palm Springs called Cabazon to check out the outlet. I'm always hearing about this place from my friends who visit from Japan, and I was finally able to see it with my own eyes. It looked huge, but in the end it was not that much. I guess I was not in the right mood for it either. It was pretty funny to walk into Gucci and Prada with a 1 gallon jug of water and a ziploc bag filled with grapes. I did get one thing that I am very happy about from the outlet though. The pot. Yes, the one I had been dreaming about for a while, and already wrote about in this blog. There was actually a Le Creuset outlet store, so of course I had to go. After considering all the colors, I decided on a classic cherry red. Besides, they were having a sale where everything red got an additional 20% off. I ended up paying $128 for a 5.5 quart round French Oven. It doesn't get much better than this.

Low VS High tech

Spent the day looking through magazines and drawing. I felt like I was going through a slump, not being able to draw very well. I switched from a mechanical pencil to a pencil to a pen, then back to a pencil and finally my trusted Pentel R.S.V.P. ballpoint pen. It worked. I really love that pen.

Yesterday we made a plan to go hiking this morning at 9am, but that didn't happen due to staying up kind of late. William got himself an iPod yesterday, and we spent the night trying to get his newly downloaded iTunes to recognize it. It just wouldn't show up, and my years of experience with iTunes and the now vintage iPod mini was practically useless on a PC. But luckily after a good night's rest, William was able to figure it out. He now has the 5th Generation iPod with video and everything. Mine is a mini, which they don't even make any more. I think they made two generations, then decided that the mini was not mini enough. I'm jealous but I am looking to the future which is the iPhone. Well, I don't know if I'll really get it right away but my phone IS ancient (black and green screen). It's so hard to keep up with technology. I'll be happy as long as they keep making my pen.

What's all this then?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/RdV4xmYOsTI/AAAAAAAAAAY/RQJQWvUR0Ro/s320/heita_window.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5032060952167493938" />
Where does the line "'Allo, 'allo 'allo. What's all this then?" come from???
One day William busted it out with this crazy voice (British accent, according to him). The way he said it bothered me and made me laugh at the same time, and when I asked him what the hell it was, he simply said "It's what British people say." I didn't believe him. Who says that?
But then today he told me that he heard it on "Futurama" as well as on "Class of 3000" (both are cartoons by the way). So I had to google it.
I was shocked to see the results.
However, I could not find the origin of this line. A few weeks later, I lost it all. All my data, that is. Almost 80 hours into playing the game, it was gone in a matter of seconds. Life is fleeting, and so is data. I won't go into detail about how this tragedy happened, but I will just say that I was crushed.

Since then I have attempted to download a gamesave and load that onto PS2, but it was way too complicated for my mind to comprehend. I am beginning to consider starting the whole thing over again, but can't bring myself to do it. It took so much time and dedication to get to where I was, and knowing how obsessed I will become once again, I feel like I should be doing something else that is more productive instead.

So I am practicing Tekken Dark Resurrection.

I started out by attempting to learn Christie, the Capoeira girl. I have been intrigued by Capoeira, and have even taken a class once. ONCE. It required so much strength to do it (especially your legs) that I decided it was not the right time for me. I was unfit for muscle challenging activity. (Maybe I will try it again sometime when I am feeling a little more adept.) I played Christie for a while, and managed to learn one combo. Then PS3 came along, and I was onto trying out a different character. I chose Baek. I liked his kicks. He seemed like a good character for beginners. (Maybe not. I wouldn't know, I'm a beginner.) After I went through that phase, I somehow ended up with Asuka. Ok, she is Japanese and I am too, AND a girl, but that is the very reason I had avoided her. It was too obvious of a choice. I had this "Humph. Asuka my ass," attitude towards her. But for some reason which I can't recall, I decided to attempt learning her. I have learned a couple of combos, and am slowly trying to move away from button mashing. It's hard. I lose my cool real easily and panic, which leads to major button mashing and tight gripping of the controller, which then results in fatigue and a sore thumb. I can see a small improvement though, and it is encouraging me to keep practicing. Unlike data, skills will not be lost as long as I keep practicing.

Hole in my pot

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HB-vxyIc794/RYEbIfNJQZI/AAAAAAAAAAM/MdVTcj0jc9I/s320/pot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5008314093242237330" />
I used to have a rice cooker. But after having used it for 8 years it finally broke. Well, not because I had used it for 8 years, but because I accidentally put in the wrong amount of water and it overflowed and bubbled up, ruining its digital system for good. Since this tragedy, I had been using the good old method of making rice in pots. Today I went to make some Wild Basmati Rice mix in this pot that is also 8 years old. It was one of two pots I had bought when I started college. Not a great pot by any means, but something cheap that did its job. The bottom of the pot had been burnt and scrubbed clean countless times, and the silver metal was surfacing from under the original black coating. I knew it was time for a new pot. Afterall, this was a college dorm pot. Not something that a 27 year old who actually enjoys cooking should be using. I had been dreaming of getting this other pot for a while now, and thinking I'd perhaps make this a Christmas gift to myself.

As I cooked my rice and daydreamed about my soon-to-be pot, I noticed that some water was dripping onto the stovetop. Oops, I'd better lower the flame. No wait, but it's not overflowing. But there's water dripping onto the flames...

It was then that I realized that my 8 year old pot had a hole in it. A hole in my metal pot. I couldn't believe it, but then again, I could. I had gotten more uses out of that pot than it's lifetime. A pot with a hole at the bottom is a useless one indeed, but then I got started on thinking about the good times we had together. The wonderful dishes we made. Oh the joy of cooking!

I know I have to throw it away, but it will be hard to say good bye.

Nabudis...?

I am blushing as I make this first post to my new blog entitled "Nabudis and Nabudat". Am I serious? Is this what I'm going to call this? Just because I am obsessed with Final Fantasy XII at the moment and can't stop saying "Nabudis" among other things?? ... But the reality is that I can't think of anything else right now, and I am not particulary good at coming up with names and/or titles, so this will have to do.
